Contractor to Watch: Charles Pankow Builders

The Charles Pankow Foundation

Shaping the skylines in California and Hawaii for half a century is an accomplishment that Pankow is extremely proud to celebrate. Founded in Altadena, Calif. in 1963, Charles Pankow’s vision for his new company was shaped on a fundamental belief: Because the builder controls the scope, quality, schedule, and cost of a project, it is in the best position to help the owner understand these factors in advance. This led Pankow Builders to be one of the earliest pioneers of the design-build delivery system and a founding member of the Design-Build Institute of America 20 years ago.

Today, Pankow continues its mission to find better building solutions that support client success. “We promote a culture of innovative thinking and challenge our people to find better ways to build. This focus is critical to serving as an active partner in the development and design process delivering value to our clients,” says Scott Anderson, senior vice president and Northern California regional manager. Pankow is experienced in every form of collaborative construction project delivery, from more traditional design-assist to multi-party shared risk/reward IPD models, with roughly $500 million in annual revenue.

Innovative thinking is also furthered through The Charles Pankow Foundation. It is the nation’s only privately funded nonprofit dedicated to building innovation. The foundation has advanced the building information modeling (BIM) industry and supports the research, development, and dissemination of new ideas and products that help the U.S. building construction industry to be more efficient and more cost-competitive by sponsoring $8 million in applied research since 2006.

“Pankow’s vision is to see the possibilities, engage the power in people, and deliver value in everything we do. We believe this encapsulates our 50 years of Thinking Beyond the Building and represents the passion that inspires us as we look forward to the next 50 years,” says Anderson.
