We launched our Polished Concrete Awards at World of Concrete six years ago because we knew the market would grow. And it has. A polished floor (or wall) is beautiful to behold and, if properly maintained, long outlasts tile and carpet.

However, as this amusing account by a do-it-yourselfer shows, achieving that finish is much more complicated than people think. Mastering processes, materials, and tools is only half the battle. The other, more difficult, half is managing client expectations by attempting to manage the players on the team who prepare your canvas.

This year we tweaked the categories to reflect our editorial redirection away from residential projects. Yes, there’s still a residential category; but more categories that reflect polished concrete’s diversity. And yes, we accept projects that are new construction. However, we’re particularly interested in projects involving previously finished concrete – in other words, projects that demonstrate particular ingenuity repairing and/or restoring the polished surface.

You’ve got until Sept. 15 to think about what you’d like to submit and gather before-and-after photos that’ll show what your crews accomplished and how. Click here for contest details and to submit entries.

We look forward to seeing what you’ve got!
