Start keeping track of fires in your neighborhood. You don’t need to become an ambulance-chaser, but just noting where fires occurred and which structures were destroyed can help remind you—after a reasonable amount of time has passed—to check up and find out what the owners are planning to do with the house. Kuiken Brothers of New Jersey does this, relying in part on a staff member who also is a volunteer firefighter.
