GMS increased its bet on Metro Detroit today with its announcement that it acquired three companies serving the Motor City and its northern suburbs: Ryan Building Materials of Southfield, Mich., Ryan’s Lakeland Building Materials of Clarkston, Mich., and Ryan’s East Building Materials of Harrison Township, Mich..
The three facilities, collectively known as RBM, are owned by Bill Johnston, who with his team will remain at the facilities.
“We are excited to welcome the RBM team into the GMS family as we strengthen our presence in the state of Michigan,” Mike Brown, president of GMS’ Midwest division, said in a statement. “With Bill and his team on board, I am confident we can further deliver on the high expectations we have set for our Company.”

GMS (short for Gypsum Management & Supply) operates more than 200 specialty dealer operations nationwide. It went public earlier this year and has been one of the most aggressive acquirers of LBM companies over the past few years. For its fiscal first quarter ended July 31, the Tucker, Ga.-base firm reported its net income more than tripled to $9.1 million on a 21.5% rise in sales to $549.8 million.
