84 Lumber named John Hay as the company’s new vice president of the Mid-Atlantic region. As Mid-Atlantic division vice president, Hay is responsible for increasing sales and profitability throughout his region in addition to overseeing operations and staffing for more than 70 locations in the region. Hay has been tasked with helping the region reach $1 billion in annual profitable sales within the next three years.

“My immediate goal is to familiarize myself with everyone and their roles,” Hay said in a press release. “I want each store to have a friendly, family-like atmosphere where all associates — whether they’ve been with us for years or just started here — can thrive.”

Hay has been with the Eighty Four, Pa.-based company since 1989 and has served in numerous roles over the past 30 years. Hay started at 84 Lumber as a manager trainee at the former Murrysville, Pa., location and most recently served as the manager of the company’s Bridgeville, Pa., branch. The Bridgeville location has achieved the highest sales and profit in 84 Lumber’s central division over the past five years, including $34.9 million in total revenue in 2018.

“John has an impressive history of developing and promoting people to positions outside of his store,” said 84 Lumber president Maggie Hardy Knox. “His leadership characteristics have been brought to my attention over the last year or so as he’s had the opportunity to address co-managers at our Leadership Camp, as well as new store managers at Manager Camp. His passion for coaching the future leaders of 84 helped solidify the decision to promote him into this role.”

84 Lumber, ranked fourth on the 2019 ProSales 100, generating $3.86 billion in sales during 2018. The company operates nearly 250 stores, component manufacturing plants, custom door shops, custom millwork shops, and engineered wood product centers in more than 30 states.
