Home-improvement retailers The Home Depot and Lowe’s are accelerating investments in their outdoor power categories and expanding their respective portfolios.

Home Depot’s enhanced assortment of outdoor power products will include the company’s top brands of cordless outdoor power—Ryobi, Makita, DeWalt, and Milwaukee—as well as “trusted brands” of gas-powered products: Toro, Echo, John Deere, Cub Cadet, Honda, and Troy-Bilt. As part of The Home Depot’s merchandise reset, the company has made the decision to discontinue the Ego line of outdoor power equipment.

“We have been extremely pleased by the customer response to our premiere outdoor power brands, as we improved the shopping experience with a simplified presentation,” Ted Decker, executive vice president of merchandising, said in a news release. “Similar to prior resets in our power tool business, outdoor power equipment is being reset and positioned by brand, and we will complete this rollout to approximately 1,300 U.S. stores by year’s end.”

Additionally, Lowe’s will begin offering select SKIL battery-powered outdoor power equipment in late 2020, including push and self-propelled mowers, leaf blowers, string and hedge trimmers, and other products and accessories.

“We are relentless in bringing the best quality, innovation, and brands to our consumers, and [this] announcement is another bold step forward in our pursuit of bringing the best outdoor power equipment offering to our stores,” Bill Boltz, executive vice president of merchandising for Lowe’s, said in a news release. “EGO is an undisputed industry leader in creating cutting-edge technology and design. This line of cordless power equipment is trusted by both DIY and pro customers to take on any lawn and garden project, with convenience and ease.”

Earlier in 2020, Home Depot began refreshing its presentation of its outdoor power category in an effort to make it easier for customers to determine which equipment would best meet their needs. Home Depot’s branded-bay presentation features the latest in battery-powered technologies that have become popular among both professional landscapers and DIYers. Home Depot expects to complete the resets in all of its remaining stores through the spring of 2021.

Earlier in the year, Lowe’s launched Honda Power Equipment and an exclusive partnership with Ariens ZTR mowers and snow products. The retailer also offers other brands across the outdoor power equipment category, including John Deere, Craftsman, and Husqvarna.
