TAL Holdings, a 10-store chain of retail building material centers in Oregon and Washington, announced the acquisition of Mount Vernon Building Center (MVBC) in Mount Vernon, Wash. After a transition period, MVBC will begin operations as part of the TAL family of companies on April 19, 2021, according to a news release.
“The culture of Mount Vernon Building Center, the market they serve, and the quality of their personnel make MVBC an excellent fit for our organization,” TAL CEO David Dittmer said. “Because of their strong brand recognition, they will continue to operate under the name of Mount Vernon Building Center.”
MVBC was founded in 1981 as a sister location to three other area lumberyards. Business growth forced a move to a larger facility after 10 years. The business was relocated to Mount Vernon in 1997.
“Since MVBC’s beginning, the company has been focused on builders, remodelers, and do-it-yourselfers,” Kevin Kok, the owner of MVBC, said in a news release. “The community-mindedness of MVBC fits well with the mission statement of TAL Holdings, which is ‘Helping Build Better Communities.’”
Dittmer said TAL Holdings will be transitioning its Friday Harbor, Wash., re-load center from its current leased site to the MVBC location over the next few weeks.
“Mount Vernon Building Center has a strong, experienced employee group. Their years of experience in our industry make their locations the place to go for building solutions for the consumer as well as the contractor,” said Dittmer. “This acquisition is an excellent addition to our company. We are anxious to expand our footprint in this growing market.”
Prior to the acquisition, Vancouver, Wash.-based TAL Holdings had five operating divisions: Tum-A-Lum Lumber, Marson and Marson Lumber, Browne’s Home Center, Gerretsen Building Supply, and Lake Chelan Building Supply. All five divisions provide contractors and homeowners with a wide assortment of building materials and services. TAL Holdings acquired Lake Chelan Building Supply in March 2020. Tum-A-Lum Lumber serves the Hood Driver, The Dalles, and Pendleton markets in Oregon; Marson and Marson serves the Leavenworth, Wenatchee, and Cle Elum markets in Washington in addition to Chelan, Browne’s Home Center serves the San Juan Islands of Washington; Gerretsen Building Supply serves the Roseburg, Ore., market; and Lake Chelan Building Supply serves customers in Mason, Wash., and Chelan, Wash.
