Woodgrain announced the acquisition of Independence Lumber, which has sawmill locations in Independence, Va., and Elkin, N.C. Woodgrain said the acquisition will allow further vertical integration by supplying lumber to nearby millwork locations.

After the completion of upgrades to the Independence, Va., sawmill, it will serve as Woodgrain’s primary supplier of the company’s Marion, Va., millwork site.

“Forestry is the Commonwealth’s third-largest private industry, supporting more than 107,000 jobs in our rural communities and providing an economic impact of $21 billion annually,” Virginia Governor Ralph Northam said at an event celebrating the completion of the acquisition. “Woodgrain continues to bring welcomed employment opportunities and capital investment to southwest Virginia, supporting my administration’s goal to bring economic vitality to all corners of the Commonwealth.”

Woodgrain said the Elkin, N.C., will also be upgraded with new machinery and equipment. The sawmill location will allow Woodgrain to supply lumber to its millwork facility in nearby Lenoir, N.C.
