This is easily the oldest idea we’ve ever reported, but it remains among the most useful. When you have long lengths of lumber placed end-wise into racks that don’t roll out, paint the ends of the lumber with a color tied to a particular length—think: green for 8-footers and yellow for 12-footers. This makes picking and inventory much easier. And when an item like molding comes in at an odd length, mark it with the color tag that applies best as well as a black mark to show it’s an oddity.
