CA Dealers Object to State’s New Lumber Tax

Building material retailers reluctant to pass costs to customers

Dealers in California are speaking out against a new bill that aims to raise revenue for the state’s timer industry while levying a 1% tax on the sale of some wood products beginning Jan. 1, the Los Angeles Times reports. One dealer told the Times that the new tax could add up to $600 to a project valuing $100,000. Even the big-boxes are reluctant to back the new legislation, with Home Depot spokesman Stephen Holmes telling the Times that the new tax “singles out the hard-hit housing industry” as it struggles to fully recover.
