Fred Erb, founder of the former Erb Lumber Company in Birmingham, Mich., died Jan. 10. He was 90. Crain’s Detroit Business reports that the LBM dealer grew his business to $280 million in sales across multiple states prior to selling the company in 1993; Erb and his wife also were actively involved in local philanthropic efforts that included founding the $100 million Fred A. and Barbara M. Erb Family Foundation in 2007 to bolster community development within Detroit.
Erb Lumber Company ranked as the second-largest dealer on the 1991 ProSales 100 with $212 million in sales to the pros. The next year, the company reported $234 million in pro sales, 65% of its total revenues. In 1993 the company increased its pro share to 80% of total sales, with $241 million in sales to the pros. In 1993 Erb sold the company to Carolina Holdings, which is now a part of Stock Building Supply.
