Huttig Building Products reported today its net income in the second quarter hit $10.4 million, more than double its $5.1 million net in the year-earlier quarter, on a 13% rise in net sales to $197.9 million.

In a press release, the St. Louis-based credited its increased sales to a hotter construction economy, the addition of a new product line, and the acquisition of BenBilt Building Systems during the April-to-June period.

Millwork sales rose 16% from a year earlier to $96.5 million, while sales of building products grew 10% to $80.5 million and wood products sales gained 9% to hit $20.9 million.

The company’s gross margin widened to 21.3% from 20.3%, in part from added sales and in part because operating expenses as a percentage of sales dipped to 16.3% from 17.1% in 2015’s second quarter.
