Compared to many other building materials, harvesting and milling framing lumber releases relatively little carbon. But most lumber also requires removing trees that could still be capturing carbon if left in the forest. In addition, leaving the roots and branches of cut trees to rot in the forest contributes to atmospheric carbon. The combined impacts make wood a less than optimal material for lowering a building's carbon footprint.

Millwork solutions manufacturer and distributor Metrie is building a manufacturing facility in Woodbridge, Ontario, in the Toronto market.

The new mill is projected to be fully operational by year-end and will include state-of-the-art technology that will enable Metrie to improve its millwork solutions, according to the company. The improvements include the expanded production capability of its patented Metrie Complete product line, which makes it easier and faster to install pre-finished molding and trim.

“The new Toronto location is our flagship manufacturing facility in the East. It is strategically designed to streamline our operations, improve efficiency, and reduce lead times,” Bill Geofroy, vice president of manufacturing for Metrie, said in a prepared statement. “The Metrie manufacturing team’s top priority is to service our customers with unparalleled dedication and exceptional quality.”

Kent Bowie, CEO of Metrie, said the Toronto facility is a commitment to the company’s growth, innovation, and value delivery for customers.

“It is the next step in our continuing evolution of product development and service offerings that will lead the millwork industry long into the future,” Bowie said.

Metrie’s portfolio of locations includes six solid wood and MDF manufacturing facilities and 28 distribution centers across the United States and Canada.
