DIY Network Series Host Pays $30K Fine to Resolve Lead Paint Allegations

EPA alleges Denver-based contractor renovated seven homes without proper certifications

Keith Nylund, host of the DIY Network Series “Raise the Roof,” has agreed to pay $30,000 to resolve allegations his firms conducted seven home renovations from 2014 to 2016 without complying with the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) lead-paint rules, the EPA says.

The EPA alleged Nylund violated many aspects of the Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule, including “failure to obtain EPA lead-safe firm certification, failure to maintain various required records demonstrating compliance on several properties, as well as violations of lead-safe work practice standards on several properties” according to a May, 4 press release.

The rule protects the public from toxic health hazards created by renovation activities involving lead-based paint. The EPA estimates lead-based paint is still present in more than 30 million homes in the U.S.

The Denver-based contractor, who runs three firms in the area, began his show in August of 2016, primarily showcasing “pop-top” renovations, in which the existing roof is removed and a new level of the house added along with a new roof.
