The fastener issue has put more focus on the need for industry-wide standards for fastener testing. The International Staple, Nail, and Tool Association (ISANTA) was already in the beginning stages of creating testing protocols and is working even harder to develop new standards. “The industry in general will work together to agree on a test method that models the corrosion behavior of metal in contact with treated wood,” says John Kurtz, executive vice president for ISANTA.

As the transition to new wood products progresses, it’s clear that the treated wood issue is still one of questions, answers, and adjustment. And as new wood treatments continue to be developed, manufacturers, dealers, and contractors alike should continue to stay tuned.

Copper azole–based Natural Select from Arch Wood Protection is one of three alternative treatments to CCA for outdoor use. Simpson Strong-Tie recommends its stainless steel connectors for the new lumber or, when use of stainless steel isn’t possible, a minimum of its ZMAX G185 hot-dipped galvanized connectors.
