Hylbert Receives Spirit of Life Award After spending his entire career in the building materials industry, Paul Hylbert, president and CEO of Redmond, Wash.–based Lanoga Corp., will be honored with the Spirit of Life award in recognition of his contributions to both his community and profession. The award will be presented by the Hardware/Home Improvement Industry (H/HI) for City of Hope on May 18. Hylbert has donated his time and efforts to several organizations, including City of Hope, the Homebuilding Community Foundation, and Habitat for Humanity, among many others. “Having been a part of our industry involvement with City of Hope since the late 1970s, and having seen the great work done by the City of Hope professionals to find cures and treatments for cancer and other life-threatening diseases, I am pleased and proud to be a partner in the 2005 Spirit of Life campaign,” Hylbert said in an announcement.
Raising close to $131 million over the past two decades, H/HI has been a major player with City of Hope (www.cityofhope.org), a cancer, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS research and treatment facility. It was recognized by U.S. News & World Report as “one of America’s best medical centers for cancer treatment.”
Lanoga Corp. (www.lanoga.com), which is celebrating its 105th anniversary this year, operates 336 lumberyards, component plants, and distribution centers through five divisions in 23 states.
Stock and Ferguson Open Joint Design Center Raleigh, N.C.–based Stock Building Supply opened the first of several joint design centers with Ferguson Enterprises, its Newport News, Va.–based sister company that distributes plumbing, HVAC, and building materials. The Carrboro, N.C., design center offers working displays and professional design assistance for a full array of Stock and Ferguson products, including kitchens and baths, decking, floor covering, lighting, appliances, windows, siding, and more. By combining product with service offerings, the 8,200-square-foot center provides a one-stop shop for professional contractors and realtors to refer their customers for design selection. “Our customer-focused goal is to let builders and realtors concentrate on their areas of specialty and save them the expense of maintaining similar design centers in each area where they operate,” said Gary Robinette, executive vice president of Stock, in a company announcement.
Stock also announced recently that it has joined the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), the remodeling industry’s sole national trade association.

Ferguson (www.ferguson.com) has more than 865 locations in 49 states with reported fiscal year 2004 sales of $5.9 billion. In Brief Boise, Idaho–based Boise Building Solutions announced the expansion of its engineered wood products manufacturing capabilities by increasing the capacity of three different plants (Alexandria, La.; St. Jacques, New Brunswick; and White City, Ore. ) by 20 percent each. All of the expansions are expected to be completed by the close of 2005. …Jeld-Wen, based in Klamath Falls, Ore., acquired Venice, Fla.–based window and door manufacturer Seasonshield, expanding its selection of coastal windows and doors and adding to Jeld-Wen’s hurricane-rated window and door product offerings. …Daniel B. Starr joined Fort Wayne, Ind.–based co-op Do it Best Corp. as director of human resources and general counsel. Starr, who has 10 years of legal experience, will oversee the company’s compensation, benefits and employee recruitment, and training and development programs. Do it Best’s Timothy Miller was promoted from retail logistics manager to retail marketing manager. Miller is responsible for the co-op’s daily management, overall growth, and strategic development, as well as its graphics and advertising management. …Atlanta-based The Home Depot opened its 1,000th Tool Rental Center on Dec. 9, in its Burlington, N.C., store. …Kent, Wash.–based Roofmaster Products upgraded its distribution warehouse with a bigger facility and new location. …Eighty Four, Pa.–based 84 Lumber Co. was recognized by Central Penn Business Journal as of one of the 100 “Best Places to Work in PA.” Selection is determined by employee surveys.
