    What Can You Do About Hybrid Builders?

    The housing industry's crash has increased the number of home builders who also do remodeling projects. That's a challenge for dealers, because these hybrids still expect high-touch service.

    A Shift in FocusIn 2008, two-thirds of all members of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) identified themselves as single-family home builders while just one-fi fth called themselves remodelers. By 2010, the share of NAHB members who said they were builders had dropped seven percentage points and the share of remodelers grew by the same number. Anecdotal evidence from builders and construction supply dealers suggests much of the shift consists of builders who have become hybrids, focusing on remodeling while continuing new-construction work.
