The federal Clean Air Act, which the EPA administers, is among several state and regional regulatory standards established for VOC content and emissions that affect various products and industrial activities, primarily to stem ground-level ozone gasses and smog. In general, state and local standards are more stringent than the EPA’s Architectural and Industrial Maintenance (AIM) Coating Rule regulating VOC levels, expressed in terms of grams per liter (g/l) in paints and other architectural and industrial coatings.
