Effluent requirements prompt facility upgrade

In keeping with Iowa’s nutrient-reduction strategy, project positions 6.2 mgd wastewater treatment plant for affordable future improvements.

Owner: City of Fort Madison, Iowa

Project: Renovate a 50-year-old facility on the Mississippi River to improve energy efficiency, address nutrient reduction requirements, and provide flood protection. Overhaul influent pump station; improve processes with higher-performance grit removal system, new aeration system, new rotary drum thickening of biosolids, and biosolids storage tank. Add dechlorination to existing chlorination disinfection system. Build combination flood wall and levee.

Contract includes: Facility and process assessments, design recommendations.
Contract value: $14 million
